In high school I took a class called "Manifest Destiny".  Our teacher taught us in that class that the pioneers compared crossing the Mississippi river with the children of Israel crossing the Jordan.  It may have been a more accurate comparison than they meant.  This reading could have come from today's headlines.  I've read ahead and things do not turn out well.  Eventually Israel is taken into captivity.
